Redundant

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 18, 2012, 7:34 PM

My position became redundant, apparently.  Me and a few others at the studio got laid off today.  Kind of in shock still, I think.  It's difficult to really process.  I've worked there since 2005, so it's been a very long run.  The studio head teared up when he told me that I'd gotten cut.  The directive came from above their heads to reduce the headcount.  When we hired a new lead animator last year, we actually got one who knew his way around rigging and scripting, and he liked making his own rigs, so my role as studio's rigger got reduced then.  I'd mostly been helping out the environment team, but we've got a fair number of environment guys now, so it's not all that huge a shock.

Well, it is a shock.  None of us saw this coming.  Not really.  But well - whatever.  So yeah.  There it is.

My husband is still there and still very much in high demand.

In all honesty, I've been pretty unhappy with work for a while now.  There's the whole 'holycrapmoney' thing - especially since we just bought the new house.  I'm just trying not to think about that right now.  I got a good severance package at least.

sigh

Just saw this today and I know what that feels like. I've enjoyed finding the tuts and updates you've been posting. I'm sure with your talent that your downtime will be short lived. There were a lot of people that squandered their time in college, but you were always putting in the extra effort. There weren't a lot of people that that, but I think we still came out ahead.

At least you have the experience? Imagine if you were trying to break back into the industry without the titles under your belt? :(

Worst comes to worst - I'm sure you can do something Indy. :) Also, don't count out the fact that so much of your work doesn't matter about being there in person. The internet means you can work for people and places previously impossible. Your work can go where you cannot. :)

Sorry to hear about this, especially the timing. The last time I got laid off at a job it was a month after my first daughter was born....It was brutal. But you have a ton of experience doing what you do so I imagine you should bounce back pretty quick. How far are you from Redmond? I imagine finding a job out there shouldn't be too bad right? Best of luck to you!

By Redmond - I assume you mean Redmond Washington? I ask because there's a Redmond Oregon that's only a 30 min drive from where I live - lol. Definitely a big difference between the two.

As for Redmond Washington - We're about an 7 hour drive south, so it's not really a commutable sort of deal, and we don't want to move. My husband is still at Sony here in Bend and we think we can manage things with his salary and me doing some freelance. I'm also looking into teaching a class on 3dsmax at the local Community College.

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that... :\ But hey don't worry, with your skills I'm sure you'll find another job in no time! Just look at this as an opportunity to start again, with another studio (or as freelance maybe?), meet new people, and so having another great time in your life. Stay focused and be happy!

Uugh I'm sorry that happened. It just brings attention back to the fact that economy just isn't getting better for anyone, and no one, not even someone with your awesome talent, is safe anymore. I hope things work out for you!! My fingers are crossed for ya!!
