this is really awesome. did you actually make her in unity? i started playing with the program a couple weeks ago and decided to go for creating everything in 3dsmax/zbrush because the 3d editing in the program looked pretty weak

Oh no - definitely didn't make the character in Unity. Modeled her in Maya, did the texturing in zbrush. She's set up in Unity with themes macanim system in the unity 4 beta.

Was this with sub dividing the mesh without smooth and just polypainting / baking?

Yup. Precisely. I just did a bunch of divides with smooth off, so the mesh remained low-poly faceted-looking, and polypainted. Originally I just thought I'd only do it for laying out the major shapes and then I'd take the texture into photoshop and do a proper job of it, but after a bit, it became obvious that I could do what I wanted just fine in zbrush alone, so I stuck with it.

She looks like a Steampunk DDR character! And... I mean that in a really awesome nostalgic way! Very cool, I'm super excited that you've been able to do this project :)

Hehe - as a matter of fact, after we first had her dancing in Unity, my husband and I both looked at each other and started to openly debate the feasibility of making a DDR / Bust-A-Move style game for iOS. He makes music and makes Unity games - I make the art assets... We're still debating, actually. heh.
