The Twelve Doctors by Athey The Twelve Doctors by Athey
Sooooooo, the thing I've been up to since getting laid off about a year ago is a bit odd and totally unplanned, but has worked out surprisingly well, I guess? So, I sell stuff on Etsy now, and one of those things are Doctor Who (and other stuff) themed cookie cutters. I made the 9th, 10th, and 11th doctors as cookie cutters a while back and people have been hounding me ever since to make the rest. I haven't got the others done as actual finished cookie cutters yet (only 4 and 5 and done and also up on the shop now) but I finally got aorund to making the others - PLUS Peter Capaldi - woo. His clothes are placeholder until we see what his getup is actually going to look like (it's literally just a copy from the Christopher Eccleston (9th Doctor).

So yeah - totally not the usual stuff from me, but the 'usual stuff' from me for the last year is basically 'nothing'. So - woo.

I basically spent quite a bit of time trying to achieve their likenesses within the limitations I've got for the whole cookie cutter thing. The line width you see is THE line width I've got to stick with. It took months of experimentation to figure out the perfect thickness for the edges of the cookie cutters to get the best results, and this width is it. Thinner then that, and I get problems that require manual filing to clean up before I can ship them out, and any thicker than that, and it doesn't cut through the dough very well, it just sort of smushes it. Anyway - not something that actually matters in this context.

For anyone whose curious as to what these things look like when they're actual 3D printed cutters, the 9th, 10th, and 11th doctors can be found here: etsy.me/11KJalI

The background is stock from ~Moonglowlilly that can be found here - fav.me/d6218pn

So plz, tell me. Just out of curiosity- Being that I've never "watched" the show I do hear a lot about it. How do these Doctors progress? It only feels like that young guy JUST became the 'new' doctor.

The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey - he's a Time Lord, a race that's basically immortal in the context that if they get the chance to regenerate, they won't die.  If you kill a Time Lord during their regeneration, then they die and that's it.  So the Doctor is the last of the Time Lords because the rest of them were killed in the Great Time War with the Dalek race (The Doctor himself, might have had a very direct role in the destruction of the rest of his race.... yeah.)  He travels around in space and time using a ship called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space.)  It's infinitely large on the inside, but on the outside looks like a blue police box from the 1950s (It's actually supposed to be able to make itself look like whatever would be most appropriate camo for where and when it lands, but it broke in the 1st episode, and got stuck as a Police Box and the Doctor has never bothered to fix it because it likes his blue box quite a lot.)

Doctor Who is hitting it's 50th year anniversary this fall, so it's been 50 years since the 1st Doctor.  It was in Black and White, was slow paced, and they hadn't quite figured out yet what they wanted the Doctor to be like, so he's a very very different kind of person.  But the Regeneration thing kind of allows for that, because when a Time Lord regenerates, they aren't just getting a new body, they're becoming a new person.  They're personality changes, their tastes change, the whole shebang.  In the first episode of the 11th Doctor's run, he spent an entire evening at a kitchen table with an 8 year old girl, eating everything in her kitchen until he found something he actually liked (Fish Fingers dipped in Custard).

This fall is the 50th Anniversary Special, which will be the 11th Doctor's last show - Matt Smith's Doctor will be killed, and regenerate into the 12th Doctor, who will be played by Peter Capaldi (It was just announced last week in this big flashy special on the BBC).  Matt Smith was the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor, and he's been going at it for Series 5, 6, and 7, which just finished.  The longest time anyone has played the Doctor was Peter Davision, who was the doctor for 7 series (seasons).

The 50th Anniversary special will see a return of the 10th Doctor - David Tennant - and since it's all about time travel and paradoxes, this is perfectly reasonable.  In fact, it's kind of par for the course.  On the 25th anniversary special, they got the first 5 doctors together (it was actually the original 4 and an actor playing the 1st because the original actor had died already).   I believe the 15th anniversary special had the first 3 doctors in it, so it's sort of a tradition for the anniversary specials to pull in cameos from previous series.

whoa.. that's kinda cool. So he's basically the same guy- just different faces. He recalls everything, I assume? He just becomes a "new" person every time? That's so nutty. Kinda stinks that he inadvertently caused the death of his race lol, or rather, played a role in it.

Thanks for the fill-in!

heh - yeah, he remembers everything.  And yeah, kinda stinks about the time lords, but if he hadn't done it, the rest of the universe would have been destroyed instead.

well poopies! But, hey, who's to say that he can't figure out a way to find an alternative way to save his people, right? "paradoxes" and all, lol.

haha- that's actually a story arc during the 10th doctor's run.  A series finale was all about the creation of a paradox machine and an attempt by the time lords to resurrect themselves.
